eBay bulk upload CSV errors: common causes and how to fix them
Bulk uploads in eBay Seller Hub (Reports > Uploads, formerly File Exchange) are fast once they work, but one problem in the file can fail the whole upload or many rows. These are the causes sellers hit most often.
"Actions are not matching with the header"
The first column header holds the action and site information, for example
*Action(SiteID=US|Country=US|Currency=USD|Version=1193). If that header was edited, retyped or damaged, or
a row's action (Add, Revise, Relist, End) doesn't fit the template, eBay rejects it. Start from a fresh template
downloaded from Seller Hub and paste your data into it rather than editing the header by hand.
Junk before the first line
Excel, especially on a Mac, can add invisible characters or blank lines at the top of a CSV. eBay then can't read the header. Open the file in a plain text editor and make sure it starts exactly with the template's first line, and save as CSV UTF-8.
Revise, Relist and End rows without an item number
These actions change an existing listing, so each row needs its ItemID. End rows also need a valid end reason (EndCode).
Numbers mangled by Excel
Excel turns long numbers such as UPC/EAN codes and item numbers into scientific notation (1.23E+11) and drops leading zeros. Format those columns as Text before pasting, or check them in a text editor before uploading.
Required fields left blank
Missing category IDs, prices, quantities, conditions or titles make rows fail. Titles over 80 characters are another common one. Filter each required column for blanks before you upload.
Check before you upload
eBay's results file tells you what failed only after the upload. Checking the file first saves a round trip per mistake.
